The Newspaper Bag, a bag steeped in history

The History Of The Newspaper Dispenser Bag Of Yesteryear

In 1940, the newspaper bag was used by American newspaper carriers. It replaced the traditional leather bag because it was much lighter and more practical. The newspaper bag was much more functional, it filled up infinitely. It is a cotton bag, open, without pockets, with a long and wide handle that allows it to be worn on the shoulder, across the body or to be positioned on the handlebars of delivery people's bicycles.

However you wear it, it won't hurt your back. The young distributing boys could therefore put their newspapers and parcels there and access them easily and quickly. Paradoxically but ingeniously, it took up very little space but could nevertheless contain a whole lot of things.

This is THE bag that inspired the current tote bag.

From Function to Fashion

Used for its functionality and practicality. Gradually, it became more democratic, first in the United States.

Indeed, after the Second World War, the LL Bean store offered a tote bag to its customers so that they could easily carry their groceries or their ice cream pins. Little by little, other brands followed this trend. On the other hand, it was smaller than the newspaper bag and was not worn on the shoulder but in the hand.

It will become a real fashion accessory, and no longer just a "shopping bag" thanks to the British actress and singer Jane Birkin who appears, one day, with a wicker basket carried in her hand. She dares to use it as a real bag by putting her wallet in it.

It is from this moment that women decide to use their fabric bag, no longer as a "shopping bag", but as an everyday bag, useful and modern.

Today, this bag, more commonly called "tote bag", which means "tote bag" is very popular. We see it worn on all the shoulders or in the hand. Everyone declines it in their own way by adding the desired patterns, quotes, fabrics and colors. It is a practical, trendy, creative and ecological object.

Our Version Of The Newspaper Bag

We have brought this bag up to date, keeping the qualities that made it so successful at the time. It was at the Inspiration Salon in Los Angeles that this bag was inspired, you can also see it here.

We have redesigned and manufactured it in total respect of its historical form, its practicality and its composition. It's made of fabric and has a large capacity.

You fill it infinitely, without ever seeing the end of it, as if it had no bottom and that's the magic of this bag !

We made it by taking inspiration from the bag of the time and the modern and current trend of the tote bag. This one is in 100% cotton Japanese denim patchwork, with several original badges that represent our brand as well as our Ocean Surplus range.

It can be worn by both men and women and allows you to have your hands completely free. It's a rare, original and unique piece since it's part of a limited and numbered edition of only 50 copies.

Just like the newspaperboys of yesteryear, you'll love this newspaper bag for its functionality and overflowing with style !
